Shannon Sharpe: Antonio Gates Ruined His Legacy

Antonio Gates

Before Antonio Gates entered the NFL, he was thought to be just another guy who would struggle to make a football roster. But the former Kent state basketball star not only started a trend of converting college basketball players into football stars, he also emerged as a would be Hall of Fame player.

That was until he was recently suspended four games by the NFL for testing positive for a banned substance.

Antonio Gates says it’s all a misunderstanding and San Diego Charges teammate and quarterback Philip Rivers agrees. Though, former Denver Broncos star and CBS analyst Shannon Sharpe isn’t buying the story.

In fact, Shannon Sharpe says Antonio Gates cheated the game and ruined his legacy.

“It calls into question everything that he’s ever accomplished,” Sharpe said. “If he does it at the beginning of his career because he was an undrafted free agent, people are gonna say he did it to get in the league. Now he did it Year 13, Year 14 — People are going to say he did it to remain in the league. It does, it makes you question everything someone has ever accomplished.”

At this point it’s hard to tell what’s the truth and what’s not, so you’d like to give Antonio Gates the benefit of the doubt until we get more information. That said, it’s certainly going to put a damper on what he did – even if he never used such a product before – assuming he is guilty.
