Oakland Raiders Sign Embattled Trent Richardson

Trent Richardson

Remember when Trent Richardson was the best running back in college football and destined for NFL stardom? It wasn’t that long ago and his rookie season with the Cleveland Browns looked like he was going to become a franchise star.

But things quickly changed and the former No. 3 overall pick was traded to the Indianapolis Colts where he flopped more than a fish out of water.

Despite being given multiple opportunities behind a relatively solid front line, Richardson continually laid dud after dud, eventually resulting in his release. Now it’s the turn of the Oakland Raiders to take a chance on Trent Richardson after they signed the running back on Tuesday morning.

After losing Darren McFadden to the Dallas Cowboys, the Raiders needed to add some additional help in the backfield and we’ve seen Trent Richardson excel at the NFL level before, even if it was for a brief window. Given that it’s not exactly a poor decision to sign the running back, though understandably expectations need to be tempered.

Latavius Murray should still be able to easily beat out Trent Richardson for the starting running back job and if Richardson doesn’t fulfill expectations, he’s an easy cut during training camp.
