Mike McCarthy To Give Up Packers Play Calling Duties?

Mike McCarthy

Green Bay Packers head coach Mike McCarthy may give up play calling duties.

Watching the Green Bay Packers offense not be orchestrated by Mike McCarthy would be a bit strange, but it’s a possibility as the head coach is considering giving up his play calling duties next season.

According to ESPN Wisconsin, McCarthy, who has previously done everything he could to retain play calling duties (namely for Aaron Rodgers) has taken some heat for his passive ways during the NFC Championship against the Seattle Seahawks and may pass the buck onto an offensive coordinator.

Eleven months ago, as he sat at the NFC coaches’ breakfast at the annual NFL Meetings, Mike McCarthy acknowledged that if he ever decided his being the offensive play-caller was having a detrimental effect on his team, he would give up the job.

In the wake of the Green Bay Packers’ NFC Championship Game loss to the Seattle Seahawks last month, the head coach is at least considering taking that step as he heads toward his 10th season.

There are a lot of successful NFL head coaches who don’t bother with play calling and it’s likely Mike McCarthy would be another if he were to drop the role from his head coaching duties. Of course, after handling play calling for a near decade, no longer doing it would be pretty weird for all involved.

A final decision regarding Mike McCarthy giving up the Green Bay Packers play calling has yet to be made.
