Carolina Panthers Release DeAngelo Williams

Carolina Panthers release running back DeAngelo Williams.

The once happy marriage between DeAngelo Williams and the Carolina Panthers is apparently over.

That’s because DeAngelo Williams was released by the Carolina Panthers on Monday morning.

Speaking with Molly Grantham of WBTV in Charlotte, DeAngelo Williams confirmed the news of his release.

It was a sub par season for the former Memphis star who struggled with injury. Still, outside of his troubles this year, DeAngelo Williams has been relatively healthy and was thought to be the Panthers running back of the future after two consecutive 1,000 yard seasons in 2008 and 2009.

Sadly it all went downhill from that point as Williams was thrown into a football time share and could never muster enough to run away with the job.

Of course, while DeAngelo Williams might one of the first ‘big football names’ to find a pink slip on his locker, he won’t be the only as NFL teams start cutting ties with their overpriced and/or oft-injured stars.

Williams should find a home with relative ease next season, though likely in a backup role considering his days of being a starting running back are all but over.
