49ers Rumors: Michael Crabtree Unlikely To Return

Michael Crabtree

The San Francisco 49ers offense during the 2014 season was nothing short of abysmal. They had their moments, but for the most part they were considered to be a disappointment. Things aren’t going to get any easier either, especially if wide receiver Michael Crabtree leaves in free agency as many expect.

While talent, Crabtree has dealt with a handful of injuries and is commanding big money. Understandably, that’s a risky investment the 49ers are wary of making which is why the Sacramento Bee suggests it will be Anquan Boldin and Stevie Johnson as San Francisco’s staring wide receivers next season, noticeably leaving out Michael Crabtree, when speaking of potential new assistant coach Bob Bicknell.

He coached Buffalo’s wide receivers in 2012, meaning he is familiar with 49ers wideout Stevie Johnson, a presumed starter in 2015. Johnson had 79 catches for 1,046 yards for the Bills in 2012.

A star at Texas Tech, Michael Crabtree has morphed into a solid and rather reliable wideout (when healthy) but hasn’t emerged as a true force, despite believing he’s worthy of such a contract. Given that, a return to the San Francisco 49ers looks questionable and even finding a deal on the open market might prove to be difficult as few teams are going to pony up the cash for a wide receiver some consider to be a bit of a problem child.
