Toronto Raptors Unlikely To Fire Coach Dwane Casey

While many expected the Toronto Raptors to be a solid team this season, their hot start to the campaign may have elevated expectations. Now struggling and missing star player DeMar DeRozan for a considerable amount of time, Toronto has fallen back to earth after losing  7 of their last 9 games.

Much of the blame has been placed upon head coach Dwane Casey, though Steve Kyler of Basketball Insiders does not believe a change is coming in the near future. That said, he does believe it’s something that could be explored once the season concludes.

Kyler gave the following response when asked if he believes Casey would be canned soon.

Not mid-season. I think its looked at in the off-season based on the entirety of the season, not just a small sample.

Casey inked a three year extension recently that’s two fully guaranteed years after this one and a team option on the third. They could eat that, but I don’t think that’s going to happen unless the season falls out from under them.

While the Toronto Raptors have plenty of money thanks to their backing from MLSE, it’s pretty rare for a franchise to eat that much of a contract unless things are going extremely bad. Given that it appears as if Dwane Casey’s future with the Toronto Raptors is mildly secure, especially if the team returns to their winning ways once healthy.
