Orlando Magic Interested In Billy Donovan As Head Coach?

Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me. Given that, it’s difficult to imagine the Orlando Magic taking yet another chance on Florida Gators head coach Billy Donovan.

But the Magic are in need of somebody to man their sideline and ESPN’s Marc Stein says Donovan could test the NBA waters after his Gators had a sub par year.

Might the Orlando Magic be a match? The first go-around between the two was nothing short of an embarrassment and while Stein says there’s nothing substantial linking the two as of yet, it’s a scenario that is likely to be discussed assuming Donovan throws his name in the NBA coaching hat.

There is a growing sense in NBA coaching circles that Florida’s Billy Donovan will give renewed consideration to making a move to the pros after a rough (by his standards) season in Gainesville. Although there is no firm indication yet that the Orlando Magic will pursue Donovan again when they ramp up their coaching search in late April, it’s a scenario that’s bound to be talked about.

Most Orlando Magic fans are likely heaving at the thought and it’s difficult to blame them, though Donovan has proven himself to be a very respected basketball mind – at least at the college level. How that would translate to the NBA game is unknown though it has to better than their previous recent debacles and he’d be a help for young talent like Elfrid Payton and Aaron Gordon.
