NBA Rumors: Greg Monroe Wants To Sign With New York Knicks?

Greg Monroe

For years the New York Knicks have been telling fans to wait until they have cap space. Once that occurs, things are going to change for the better and basketball will be back in the Big Apple.

Well, we’re just a few games away from the regular season coming to an end and the Knicks now being in position to use that money to their advantage.

But who are they going to spend it on? Well, according to the New York Daily News, there’s a very strong chance that money will be spent on Detroit Pistons big man Greg Monroe.

Monroe, who was a restricted free agent last season, refused to sign a long-term deal with any team making him an unrestricted free agent at season end. That means the Pistons, unlike last season, will not be able to match a contract offer making the former Georgetown star eligible to sign anywhere he’d like.

Maybe the worst kept secret in the NBA is that Phil Jackson plans to pursue Detroit Pistons forward Greg Monroe in free agency this summer. In fact, one league executive called it “about as close to a done deal as you can get.”

A done deal is illegal of course and would open Jackson and the Knicks to tampering charges. A more likely scenario is that representatives from both parties have made their interest known and will proceed accordingly once the free-agent recruiting period begins on July 1st. It happens all the time. …

The Pistons will own Greg Monroe’s Bird Rights and will have the ability to sign him to the longest and most lucrative offer, assuming they are willing to do so, but perhaps playing for the New York Knicks is a bigger draw for Monroe.
