When Wesley Matthews signed with the Dallas Mavericks (or at least verbally committed to play for the Mavs), he did so because he said he wanted to play with DeAndre Jordan.
Of course, we all know how that went and Mark Cuban, knowing that, offered to let Wes Matthews out of his Dallas Mavericks contract.
But Wes was having none of it, suggesting he was excited to be a member of the Dallas Mavericks basketball organization and that he wants to play with Dirk Nowitzki and company.
I have to say, that’s a pretty cool gesture on the part of Mark Cuban and an even cooler one on the part of Wes Matthews.
Of course, it was just a few days ago that Mark Cuban hinted the Mavs likely would have attempted to tank the season had they whiffed on signing DeAndre Jordan, meaning they might have preferred not to have Wesley Matthews hefty contract on their books. But it appears now they’ll swing into damage control and try to build yet another playoff contender with Dirk and Wes leading the way.
Certainly one of the strangest few days in free agency, no matter the sport, that I’ve ever experienced.
