LeBron James: Not Winning NBA Title Does Not Mean You Are Not Great

There’s no denying that LeBron James is one of the greatest basketball players to ever live. But there’s also some belief that James doesn’t have the same passion for winning as players like Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant.

I’m not sure I’d agree with that sentiment, but sometimes James’ comments certainly make such a vision believable.

Case in point, his most recent suggestion that not winning an NBA title does not mean you’re not great.

“If you don’t know the history of the game, man, you will forget how many great teams didn’t win championships. And, that doesn’t mean they wasn’t great, though.”

In fairness to LeBron James, he does have a point. There have been many great players and teams throughout NBA history who haven’t been able to hoist the Larry O’Brien trophy. That said, greatness is defined in rings and nobody sits back and thinks about how good the 2001 Sacramento Kings were.

So while LeBron’s argument is valid in the simplest of forms, it’s a difficult one to run with considering greatness is defined by titles.
