With deep pocketed teams like the New York Yankees and Los Angeles Dodgers entering the Yoan Moncada rumors, it’s unlikely the Cuban sensation would sign with a small market club. Still, if you don’t put forth an offer you have zero chance to sign the 19-year-old so that’s why the Tampa Bay Rays have put in a bid on Yoan Moncada.
Sure, it’s unlikely that he signs with the Rays and becomes Evan Longoria‘s battery mate, but why not give it a shot if you’re the Rays? That’s likely their thought process as it’s expected they will make a bid in the next few days/weeks when offers are sent to Moncada.
#Rays may put in a bid on Cuban free agent Moncada but price expected to be well out of their range

There are other small market teams like the San Diego Padres and Oakland A’s who are said to have interest according to the Yoan Moncada rumors so it’s not as if signing with a small market team is completely outlandish. Plus, the phenom would only be a few hour flight away from Tampa and would only be closer if he played for the Miami Marlins, so perhaps the Rays are hoping their locale plays favorably towards them.
