Stephen Strasburg Trade Rumors: Will Command Massive Return

If the Washington Nationals do decide to trade pitcher Stephen Strasburg, one thing is clear – they’re going to get one hell of a return. That’s rather obvious, but Jeff Sullivan of FanGraphs broke down the parameters of Straburg’s situation and believes prying the former San Diego State phenom out of D.C. will require an enormous package.

While there are other big names available in the pitching market, say like Cole Hamels, there’s much more going for Stephen Strasburg when the two are compared.

In addition to being younger, Strasburg is affordable to just about every team in Major League Baseball. That’s not something Hamels can say and will be part of the reason as to why the Washington Nationals can request everything but the kitchen sink in a Stephen Strasburgh trade.

At $50 million, you’re talking about the value of extremely good prospects. Which is probably obvious — Strasburg should bring back an extremely good package, in a deal. That’s called “passing the smell test”. This is the last update I’ve seen on estimating prospect value. When you’re dangling a pitcher like Stephen Strasburg, almost no one in the minors would be rightly considered off-limits.

The fact that Stephen Strasburg is still under team control, is just 26-years-old and brings with him a salary any team can afford will give the Nationals the freedom to almost hand pick the prospects they want in exchange.
