San Francisco Giants Release Marco Scutaro

Marco Scutaro

When the San Francisco Giants acquired Marco Scutaro during their 2012 World Series run, they couldn’t have imagined the boost the infielder gave them. Sadly, that half season of stardom was about all Scutaro would be able to give the Giants as he’s battled a nasty back injury in the time since.

The Giants have been patient with the 39-year-old, but after missing yet another season with the injury and not getting much healthier, the team decided to cut ties on Wednesday morning, releasing the veteran.

San Francisco recently signed Norichika Aoki and needed to clear a roster spot for the outfielder, so it was Marco Scutaro who was given the pink slip. The decision was likely much easier thanks to the play of Joe Panik who appears entrenched as San Francisco’s second baseman for the foreseeable future.

Injuries and frustrations aside, there’s no denying what Marco Scutaro brought to the Giants in 2012 and they most certainly don’t win the World Series without him. Hell, they don’t even get out of the National League Championship series, assuming they would have made the postseason at all.

San Francisco owes Scutaro $6 million dollars this season, the final year of his contract.
