Phillies, Brewers Jonathan Papelbon Trade ‘Dormant’

Jonathan Papelbon

The on-again, off-again Jonathan Papelbon trade between the Philadelphia Phillies and Milwaukee Brewers has apparently died yet again as Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports says the trade discussion is now “dormant”.

Both Milwaukee and Philadelphia initially exchanged trade proposals before giving up on the deal. However it was reported the Brewers really wanted to bring the eccentric closer aboard and trade talks began again just a few days later, however, as of right now all is quiet on the trade front.

The Phillies only were willing to pay a significant part of Papelbon’s contract if the Brewers parted with a top prospect, according to major-league sources.

The Brewers, unwilling to make such an exchange, instead proposed sending reliever Jonathan Broxton to the Phillies as a way to balance the finances.

While such a deal likely would have included other pieces, the premise was flawed for both clubs and the talks currently are dormant, sources said.

Philadelphia has been very adamant about what they receive in return for trades involving Jonathan Papelbon and Cole Hamels with no team willing to meet their overpriced demands. Perhaps the Brewers will continue to wait them out, however with interest in re-signing Francisco Rodriguez, they can’t wait very long.
