Nationals Manager Matt Williams Angry At Bryce Harper

Bryce Harper

Oh Bryce Harper. Can the Washington Nationals outfielder go a day without pissing somebody off? Apparently not, though this time it’s his manager, Matt Williams, who has expressed frustration with the All-Star.

This past weekend, Bryce Harper made waves when he suggested the Chicago Cubs were a joke if they didn’t name Kris Bryant to their Opening Day roster and now the outfielder is in trouble again after the Nationals recent spring training game against the Houston Astros.

During the fifth inning, Alex Presley of the ‘Stros hit a soft line drive to right field and Harper decided to play the ball very slowly. It was all part of a plan to bait Presley into taking second base, which he attempted to do.

Bryce Harper and his cannon of an arm threw Alex Presley out, but despite the good result, Matt Williams was none too pleased.

‘You get in that situation and allow him to get to second base, one swing of the bat and that’s a run for them,” Williams added. ”We want to make the other team earn it.”

It’s very easy to understand Matt Williams’ side of the argument and he’s probably right, though, it was an educated play on the part of Bryce Harper too. Is it really any different than a base stealer taking a risk?
