MLB rumors: Detroit Tigers, Toronto Blue Jays talk Dioner Navarro trade

Sure, Dioner Navarro might be a well traveled catcher but the backstop put up damn good numbers for the Toronto Blue Jays last season. That’s why so many teams have expressed interest in the veteran, including the Detroit Tigers who are said to have called the Jays about a potential Dioner Navarro trade.

With Victor Martinez’s availability for the start of the season in jeopardy, the Detroit Tigers have had discussions about acquiring switch-hitting Dioner Navarro from the Toronto Blue Jays, according to major league sources.

Not only did Dioner Navarro hit a very solid .274 with a .314 OBP last season, he also clubbed 12 home runs and knocked in 69 RBI in 139 games. No, that won’t register an All-Star apperence but you aren’t going to do much better when it comes to a catcher, let alone somebody who’s not making a significant salary.

Needless to say, it’s rather easy to see why the Detroit Tigers are interested in a Dioner Navarro trade, especially with Victor Martinez dealing with his torn meniscus.

Navarro also doesn’t come with much contractual baggage as he’ll only make $5 million this season and can be a free agent once the year concludes. What the Toronto Blue Jays are seeking in return for the catcher is unknown.
