It’s been somewhat of a quiet free agent market for former Detroit Tigers ace pitcher Max Scherzer. While his fellow free agent counterpart James Shields has drawn interest from multiple teams, Scherzer’s near $200 million dollar price tag has kept teams from committing. That may change in the near future though as the Washington Nationals may be offering the veteran pitcher a seven-year contract.
That’s the word from Jon Heyman who says Washington and an unnamed team are discussing scenarios with Max Scherzer which potentially include seven-year deals.
Top free agent pitcher Max Scherzer is talking to the Nats and at least one other club about potential seven-year scenarios, sources said.
The Nats have a chance to win the services of the top free-agent pitcher after coming out of nowhere. Nats GM Mike Rizzo drafted Schezer for the Diamondbacks and has long been an admirer.
Such a commitment likely wouldn’t come without some hefty options and it’s likely Scherzer would never see them vest come the sixth or seventh year of a said deal. Still, a seven-year contract will likely eclipse the $200 million dollar target price that Scherzer was said to be seeking.
While the Arizona Diamondbacks were also mentioned as a potential suitor, it is not known if they are the other team discussing a contract with Scherzer.
