Johan Santana Rumors: Yankees, Blue Jays, Padres Interested

Johan Santana

It’s been a few years since Johan Santana was healthy, yet the veteran pitcher continues to suggest he can pitch in the Majors. The jury is still out on that, though given his past success teams are apparently willing to give the southpaw the benefit of the doubt.

Three teams linked to the former Cy Young award winner candidate are the New York Yankees, Toronto Blue Jays and San Diego Padres – all of whom have watched Johan Santana throw either side sessions or game action in the Venezuelan league.

They aren’t alone in their interest though as Jon Heyman notes.

Johan Santana is essentially a free lottery ticket. He’s cheap and you won’t have to invest anything other than a one-year contract. Chances are it’s probably not going to work out, but what if it does? What if Santana can return to form where he had a sub 3.00 ERA for the New York Mets a few seasons back? All for what will likely prove to be a minor league contract?

Some may laugh at teams for showing interest in Santana and that’s understandable, though stranger things have happened than a constantly injured pitcher returning to form.
