James Shields Unlikely To Sign With San Diego Padres

For the past few decades, the San Diego Padres have spent their offseason digging through the bottom of the talent barrel. That changed this year though with the additions of Justin Upton and Wil Myers through trades.

Those weren’t the only blockbuster moves the Padres were looking to make though as they reportedly have shown interest in free agent pitcher James Shields.

Hoping their cavernous ballpark would be attractive to Shields, San Diego began chasing the former Kansas City Royals ace though are unlikely to sign him according to Ken Rosenthal.

Even if the Padres were to break the bank on James Shields, it probably wouldn’t be enough for the pitcher who has yet to find a contract to his liking. Add in the relatively tough division with the San Francisco Giants and Los Angeles Dodgers and its understandable as to why James Shields might be looking elsewhere, especially if he’s forced to take a “discount” on his contract.

Shield’s would obviously be a high profile addition for the Pads and one of their best free agent signings in franchise history, but it just don’t look like it’s going to happen.
