Cole Hamels Rumors: Trade Could Happen By Spring Training?

Cole Hamels

Although the Philadelphia Phillies came out on Tuesday and suggested a Cole Hamels trade was unlikely, especially in the near future, Pat Gillick seems to have a different stance.

The interim president says that while he does believe Hamels is likely to start the season in a Philadelphia Phillies uniform, all it would take is for one phone call to change the situation – assuming the price is right.

“It’s funny. In this game, things change. People are not in the mood to do something, then they go to Spring Training and all of a sudden … they realize they want to be competitive and want to do something. A lot of this maybe will shake out in Spring Training. I’d look for probably more interest in a lot of our players come Spring Training.”

It’s a bit odd to see the GM and team president on different pages regarding the trade of their ace pitcher, though in fairness most teams wouldn’t come out and directly suggest they’re attempting to trade a player.

As for a Cole Hamels trade, it’s been rumored the Phillies asking price is upwards of three high level prospects, a price no team has been willing to pay thus far.
