Chicago White Sox Sign Catcher Geovany Soto

Although Geovany Soto was said to have interest from at least four teams, the catcher finally made a decision on his new team this afternoon and it’s somewhat familiar territory.

Soto, who spent the first 8-years of his career with the Chicago Cubs will be heading towards the southside of the Windy City after he signed with the Chicago White Sox. Even better for the White Sox? The deal is only a minor league contract meaning they don’t have to invest anything into Soto if they so incline after the Spring.

Geovany Soto most recently played with the Oakland A’s and Texas Rangers, who were said to have interest in bringing him back. However, the 32-year-old likely felt there could be ample playing time behind Tyler Flowers and decided the White Sox were his best opportunity for game action.

At one time, Soto was considered to be a decent hitting catcher though he’s been sub par with the stick for a few seasons now and can’t be relied upon offensively. That said, he still brings with him a very decent defensive game and should be a solid backstop for the White Sox assuming he makes the roster.
