While it’s possible that James Shields could sign by week end considering he reportedly has offers from multiple teams on the table, the Boston Red Sox are not one of those squads.
That’s the word from Nick Cafardo who suggests the Sox are out of the mix on the right-hander.
@jonmorosi reported there are multiple teams making an offer to James Shields, but the Red Sox aren’t one of them per major league source.

Multiple teams like the San Diego Padres, Toronto Blue Jays and Miami Marlins have all been connected to James Shields in recent days, though it’s said the former Kansas City Royals ace would prefer to pitch on the West Coast.
That’s good news for teams like the Padres, as Shields lives just up the road from Petco Park.
It’s also possible that additional West Coast based teams could enter the bidding process, especially if James Shields’ asking price continues to fall. But for now, it doesn’t sound as if the 32-year-old arm will be pitching for the Boston Red Sox next season.
Yesterday, it was reported the Red Sox and Phillies were discussing a Cole Hamels trade, though Boston was not willing to part with their top catching prospect in exchange for the southpaw.
